6 THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN HIRING ANY CONTRACTOR:

  1. TRUST- Do you trust this person to work in your home? When it comes down to it, the most important thing to check is your own gut feeling. How do you feel about this contractor working own your home which is probably your single largest investment.
  2. REFERENCES- Other customers like yourself who can tell you about the service and experience before hiring them. Talk about the quality, communication, project timing, courtesy, cleanliness etc..before hiring anyone.
  3. COMPANY RATINGS AND REVIEWS- This is a rather new option due to the help of the Internet and websites which are more common these days. Ratings say a lot about any business. They are bias opinions and reflect all aspects of the project from: communication, cleanliness, timely matter, quality, and value. All can be reviewed with a click of the mouse rather than making phone calls to ask previous customers about the service.
  4. ACCEPTING THE LOWEST BID- As we all heard. "you get what you payed for" applies especially in hiring a contractor working on your home. I often see projects that are basically destroyed and am told how long it took on top of the poor craftsmanship. Different contractors can vary widely on pricing and level of detail even when bidding for the same job. Make sure you explain carefully to the contractor about your project in detail so they are all on the same page when they provide the estimate.
  5. PAYMENT- Know a payment schedule before hiring and to watch out for prepaying before any work begins which could result in a contractor using your money to possibly fund other projects that may not be going so well and possibly resulting in not seeing him again. Your not only out a payment, you need to start all over again in finding another contractor which delays the project further.
  6. IF A PERSON CLAIMS TO HAVE MANY YEARS EXPERIENCE- I cannot tell you how many people receive bad workmanship from contractors who've claimed to be in business or the trade for twenty years or more. Do not believe if a person claims he has twenty years of experience he will do a good job. He could of done a poor job for twenty years for all you know. I always suggest to check the company ratings and reviews to have them speak for themselves.
